Paddler's Guide

What to Wear

Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet — quick-dry fabrics are ideal. Avoid cotton if possible. Water shoes or sandals with a heel strap work great. Bring a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen before you launch.

What to Bring

Water and snacks for the day, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a camera or phone in a waterproof case, and any personal medications. Dry bags are available upon request, but space is limited — pack light. Collapsible coolers are best, but some larger coolers can fit in canoes.

Water Conditions

Conditions on East Texas waterways can change with rainfall and spillway releases. Always call ahead to check current conditions before your trip. We'll give you the most up-to-date information and recommend the best route for the day. Not sure about current conditions? Give us a call — we're happy to share what we know, even if you're not renting from us that day. We want every paddler out there to have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Wildlife

East Texas waterways are home to incredible wildlife — herons, egrets, wood ducks, osprey, bald eagles, alligators, river otters, and much more. Move quietly, stay observant, and bring binoculars if you have them.

Safety

Always wear your PFD (life jacket) on the water. Let someone on shore know your float plan. Stay aware of weather — get off the water if you hear thunder. Our staff will cover all safety basics before you launch.

Leave No Trace

Help us protect these beautiful waterways. Pack out everything you pack in, avoid disturbing wildlife or nesting areas, and stay on established water routes when possible.
